Finding Space in Your Space

Now that your home has become a workplace, a school and more, you may be feeling like you crave a little more space. Moving may not be the answer. Some creative thinking can help you find more room inside your home and out.

Ways to Find More Room in Your Home

Don’t wait for spring cleaning, declutter now. As the seasons change, look for items you don’t need out and about every day and put them away. Donate items you don’t need any longer. Removing items is a great way to discover more floor space in any home.

Brighten your walls. Bright, light space feels larger. There are several ways you can bring more lightness to rooms.

  • Paint or wallpaper can make a room feel taller and more spacious. Lighter colors, such as pastels, can add extra light to a room.
  • Mirrors can make a space look larger and brighter. Position yours so it reflects the outdoors to add an extra feeling of space.

Add storage options. Is there a closet you can convert to fit more storage items? You can make your own organizer system or look at systems that are available to buy. Furniture with built in storage, like ottomans and benches, can also help you stash away items.

Rethink your rooms.  Just because a room was used a certain way in your floor plan doesn’t mean you are confined in using that space in that particular form. Your dining room could make a great home office or even a playroom. A large closet can become a study cubby.

Create a room outdoors. Some outdoor furniture can make your deck or patio a wonderful living space. Add a canopy and some screening to create space that works for most seasons and weather. Here in Reston we are lucky to have wonderful, scenic outdoor areas to enjoy.
