School Days in Reston

Fairfax County Public Schools are back in session. We wish all school-age Restonians a successful school year. For the rest of us, it’s time to watch out for walkers and school buses.

Public Schools in Reston

There are many school options for children in Reston. We are fortunate to have several outstanding public schools located right here:

Some students attend other public and private schools in the area as well.

Important Dates

Every parent needs the 2019-20 school year calendar on their fridge to track days off and other events that affect student schedules.

Notable 2019-20 school year dates include:

  • Thanksgiving break, November 27-29
  • Winter break, December 23, 2019-January 3, 2020
  • Spring Break, April 6-10, 2020
  • Last day of school, June 12, 2020

State Laws for Stopping for School Buses

With school in session, drivers need to remember laws related to school buses. In Virginia, you must stop for stopped school buses with flashing red lights and an extended stop sign when you approach from any direction on a highway, private road or school driveway. Stop and remain stopped until all persons are clear and the bus moves again.

You must also stop if the bus is loading or unloading passengers and the signals are not on.

You do not have to stop if you are traveling in the opposite direction on a roadway with a median or barrier dividing the road and the bus is on the opposite side of the median or barrier.

Schools Help Make Our Community Great

Schools are a terrific community resource. They are a place where our community can come together for learning and for fun.

As the school year progresses there will be sports teams to cheer, music and drama performances to attend and much more. Schools always need adult volunteers to help with various programs.

Consider getting involved at a school near you. You won’t regret the opportunity to get to know more of your neighbors!
